Children are unpredictable. You can raise a child, secure in the fact that they're going to become a concert cellist, and instead, they become a highly competent business consultant. It’s an amazing outcome, but still unpredictable. I’ve known other people who are great parents and do all the right things, and somewhere along the way, their kid goes off the rails. Heartbreaking, and unpredictable. That’s why I love gardening. When you plant a carrot, you get a carrot – totally predictable. I love the song Plant a Radish, Get a Radish, from the old musical, The Fantasticks. If you’re unfamiliar with this musical, I recommend you become familiar with it – it’s a treat.

I’ve had radishes, lettuce, and kale in my garden for several weeks now, but Holy Guacamole, Batman! I’ve got green beans – lots of them.
You don’t have to leave your home to have an adventure. With the right mindset, you can have an adventure in your own backyard. I love my vegetable garden. It’s a place for daily discoveries and small thrills. It’s very exciting when day after day you look at the bare dirt, and begin to believe a seed you planted will never sprout, and then overnight it sprouts and grows an inch. It blows my mind! Having a garden requires that I exercise patience; like an adventure deferred. It’s something that I need to exercise, as it doesn’t come naturally to me; when I want something, I usually want it now (which means that Amazon really loves me. I hate you Amazon – well, kind of).
Now and then I’ve talked to my co-workers about my gardening habit, and those who don’t garden already, usually express a desire to do so, but think it’s too time-consuming. My experience has been, that other than regular watering, which is rather essential, and a solid early-spring weekend devoted to setting up the garden (with help from my husband), the vegetables pretty well take care of themselves. I just sit back and watch the seeds grow. (While I do buy some starter plants, I mainly use seeds because they provide for a cheaper adventure).
So, what to do with all those green beans? As I stated in an earlier post, one of my favorite small adventures is trying new recipes. I made a variation of the Green Bean and Purple Potato Salad posted on my current favorite food blog, Love and Lemons. I already had small red and white potatoes that I needed to use so I sub’d those for the purple potatoes. I also had half a fennel bulb that I didn’t want to waste. Speaking of adventure, fennel is the weird, but delicious food I’ve been experimenting with lately (I had to look online to see how to cut it). I roasted the potatoes & fennel with some olive oil, S&P, and red pepper flakes & combined with the blanched green beans and yummy dressing from the recipe. It was good with the brisket my hubby smoked this weekend, and I’ve been eating the leftovers for lunch.
If you’re looking for an adventure just outside your door, plant some herbs in a pot on the porch, or go whole-hog and plant a
veggie garden. It’s a predictable adventure, and couldn’t we all use a little predictability in our crazy lives? Plus, you might get an adorable visitor.
